If you intend the hours to count towards your diploma requirements, be sure to check the list of ineligible activities below before beginning your work.

If you have done work that is ineligible, you will still be able to include that information on your resume or in your portfolio.

Ineligible Activities

The Ministry of Education developed a list of activities that are ineligible. These include activities that:

  • are a requirement of a class or course in which the student is enrolled;
  • take place during the time allotted for instructional program on a school day; however, an activity that takes place during the student's lunch break or spare period(s) is permissible;
  • take place in a logging or mining environment, if the student is under 16 years of age;
  • take place in a factory, if the student is under 15 years of age;
  • take place in a workplace other than a factory, if the student is under 14 years and not accompanied by an adult;
  • would normally be performed for wages by a person in the workplace;
  • involve operating a vehicle, power tools, or scaffolding;
  • involve the administration of any type or form of medication or medical procedure to other persons;
  • involve the handling of substances classed as "designated substances" under the Occupational Health and Safety Act;
  • require the knowledge of a trades person whose trade is regulated by the provincial government;
  • involve banking or the handling of securities, jewelry, works of art, antiques, or other valuables;
  • consist of duties normally performed in the home;
  • involve a court-ordered program (i.e. community-service program for youth, probationary program);
  • involve the use of a firearm.

Are you looking to complete your community involvement hours?

The Ontario Snowmobile Oval Racers are looking for students to join their team of volunteers to make this race season possible.  While striving to put on successful events, they also aim to ensure the safety of all our volunteers and members.  They are looking for assistance in the following areas:

* Event Set Up and Tear Down

* Gate Marshals

* Parking Marshals / Pit Marshals

* Sled Recovery

* And Many Other Areas

The Taylor Cup is a fundraising event for the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.  It is a hockey tournament that takes place January 25 and 26, 2019.  They are looking for scorekeepers, timers and general event assistance.  See the PDF or poster below for more information:

Dress for Success is looking for individuals or groups to wrap gifts for their 3rd annual Fundraiser being held at the Orillia Square Mall.  See the PDF and picture below for more information.

 

Gift Wrapping 2018.jpgGift Wrap Training will be held Saturday, November 24th from 1pm to 3 pm.

 

Gift-wrapping sessions will be held each Saturday and Sunday in December (mall hours) and Friday, December 14th through Monday, December 24th (mall hours).  Shifts are three hours long.

 

Duties include:

● Wrapping and tagging presents

● Collection of monetary payment

The staff at Trillium Manor is really hoping to recruit youth in order to have more youth volunteers engaged with the residents and activities at their facility.  Volunteering at Trillium Manor is a great opportunity for students to complete their mandatory volunteer hours while learning and building new skills.

They are looking for volunteers to assist with:

- Coffee and Tuck Shop on Friday mornings  (if you have a spare!)

- Assisting residents to and from events, church, outings

- Arts and crafts

- Story writers to create resident’s (or residents’) life history

- Meal assistance

- Individual visiting

Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital is in need of volunteers, particularly in the Coffee / Gift Shop.  If you are interested in earning some hours there, Volunteer Application Forms are available in Guidance or at this website

Need volunteer hours but want to have fun at the same time?  Join the "Youth Involvement" program as a Peer Volunteer with Simcoe Community Services!

From September to June, high school-aged youth from all over Orillia come to attend "Orillia Ultimate Thursday" events.  Youth participate in bowling, craft and games nights, dance classes, movie nights and have the chance to connect with friends.

All volunteers are required to submit a Criminal Reference Check and complete a volunteer orientation.

WANTED

Clothes Rack.pngEnergetic youth available some Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays during the summer to help out with our thrift shop (Penny Wise). Open three days a week from 1:15 pm – 3:45 pm you would not be required to work everyday just looking to fill some gaps in the group schedule.  There would be on site job training and some money handling very basic math would be involved.  The hours spent in the shop would count towards the school required hours.  The shop is located as St James' Anglican Church 58 Peter St. N.

The Orillia Fairgrounds Market is in need of a few students who would like to volunteer their time to help at the Market.

 

They need one or two students who would like to run their Junior Farmers’ booth, where you would be interacting with children and encouraging them to do activities.Orillia Fairgrounds Farmers' Market.png

 

They are also looking for help with the Market set-up and/or tear-down.  This requires some lifting.  An OSS student started as a volunteer and has been hired there because of his hard work and dedication!!

 

The ideal scenario would be that the volunteers stay with the Market for the duration of the outdoor season (now until the end of October).  Remember to send a resume.

The Orillia Museum of Art and History (OMAH) hosts its Youth Arts Council every Friday from 3:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.  Volunteers get to work on art projects, decide on future art initiatives put on by OMAH, eat pizza, and hang out.  Not a bad way to get those hours!  If you are interested, contact Ninette at executivedirector@orilliamuseum.org and/or 705 326 2159.

If you are looking for Community Involvement Hours, why not give the Orillia District Snowmobile Club a call?  The club has a number of Fall projects where extra hands are needed.  Call 705-558-1247 or visit their website.

The club accepts both male and female volunteers.  No snowmobiling experience is necessary.
